Finally, you might have to reregister or reinstall some of your software. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s almost always inconvenient. That said, reinstalling OS X almost always corrects all but the most horrifying and malignant of problems. The process in El Capitan is (compared with root-canal work, income taxes, or previous versions of OS X) relatively painless. In theory, you should have to install El Capitan only once, or never if your Mac came with El Capitan preinstalled. If any essential OS X files become damaged or corrupted or are deleted or renamed If you replace your internal hard drive with a larger, faster, or solid state drive If you buy an external hard drive and want it to be capable of being your Mac’s startup disk (that is, a bootable disk) If you have a catastrophic hard-drive crash that requires you to initialize (format) or replace your boot drive If your Mac is currently running any version of OS X except El Capitan But you might find occasion to install, reinstall, or use it to upgrade, such as And in a perfect world, that would be the case. The following instructions do triple duty: Of course they’re what you do to install OS X for the first time on a Mac or a freshly formatted hard or solid-state disk. But they’re also what you do if something really bad happens to the copy of OS X that you boot your Mac from, or if the version of OS X on your Mac is earlier than 10.10 El Capitan. In other words, these instructions describe the process for installing, reinstalling, or upgrading OS X El Capitan. You must have Internet access to complete this procedure. If you’ve never had El Capitan on this Mac, the first thing to do is visit the Mac App Store, download El Capitan (it’s free), and install it. Once you’ve done that, here’s how to install, reinstall, or upgrade to El Capitan, step by step:īoot from your Recovery HD partition by restarting your Mac while holding down the Command+R keys. Select Reinstall OS X, and click Continue. The OS X El Capitan splash screen appears.Ī sheet informing you that your computer’s eligibility needs to be verified by Apple appears.Ĭlick Continue to begin the process of installing or reinstalling OS X. If you’re not connected to the Internet, you’ll be asked to choose a Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu in the top-right corner. The El Capitan software license agreement screen appears.

One of her best albums, 1980's Roses in the Snow, is energized by her engagement with new traditionalists like Ricky Skaggs, whose dark, surging duet on "Green Pastures" is a highlight of both of their careers-or of anyone's career, for that matter. But in general her enthusiasm for finding new artists to work with has been a huge boon for her music. And I have to admit my deep distaste for "Sultans of Swing" has made me afraid to really engage with her 2006 album with Mark Knopfler. Her work with Daniel Lanois sometimes sounds more bloated than sweeping. Not every one of Harris's collaboration has been a total success. And she worked with distinctive producers, such as Brian Ahern (to whom she was married for a time) and, somewhat startlingly, Daniel Lanois, whose big, echoey, New Age soundscapes re-energized her career on 1995's Wrecking Ball. She recorded with other singers-most famously on her massively successful 1989 Trio album with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton. She was known for championing young songwriters, like Rodney Crowell, who also joined her band. The Long, Complicated History of Mamas in Country Musicīut even after she started recording albums in her own right, her solo career was never precisely solo. Her first famous recordings were as Gram Parson's protégé and collaborator, lending her pure harmony to his wasted hippie warble on 1974's Grievous Angel. She's pretty much always sharing someone else's vision, or asking someone else to share hers. A Vision Shared is, after all, a big part of what her career has been about. Still, there's something right about it as an introduction to her work. "Hobo's Lullaby" isn't one of Harris's radio hits, and it's not a song she's especially associated with. As I said, it was the first time I'd heard her voice, and I never forgot it. But Harris's effort still stood out, as she turned Guthrie's ode to life on the rails into a sweet keening, as much elegy as lullaby. There are lots of great performances on the album: Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska-esque "I Ain't Got No Home" and Brian Wilson's Phil-Spector-worthy treatment of "Goodnight Irene" for example. Lead Belly's recording date of this blues standard is unknown, but Pete Seeger learned it from him and carried on the tradition. The first Emmylou Harris song I heard was " Hobo's Lullaby." It was a track off of Folkways: A Vision Shared, a collection of cover versions of songs associated with Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down, Lead Belly Lead Belly recorded a version in 1934 at Louisiana's Angola Prison, and John Fogerty and bandmates re-energized it (and Lead Belly's Cotton Fields) on 1969's Willy and the Poor Boys. The Midnight Special, Creedence Clearwater Revival The "King of Skiffle'' was the UK's most important musician before the Beatles, whom he influenced with this washboard-driven version of a Lead Belly standard. One of the most popular blues songs of the 1920s took on a new life with Lead Belly's 1943 version, featuring Sonny Terry on harmonica.įirst recorded by Texas Alexander in 1927, the song was done by Lead Belly for his final sessions in 1948 and Eric Burdon's Animals took it to No. Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out, Derek and the Dominosīessie Smith popularized Jimmy Cox's song in 1929, Lead Belly boosted it further in the 1940s, and Eric Clapton and Duane Allman bonded over it in 1970 on the Layla album. The Plant-Page arrangement is inspired by Lead Belly's 1939 Gallis Pole, but the rockers didn't credit him on Led Zeppelin III. Singer Bill Bartlett led the Lemon Pipers pop group, which morphed into Starstruck which morphed into Ram Jam, which scored a minor and mildly controversial hit with this song in 1977. Kurt Cobain recorded this harrowing version with his bandmates in 1993, which wound up on the posthumous release MTV Unplugged in New York. It was his signature song, but he died the year before the Weavers made it a national hit in 1950. USA TODAY's Jerry Shriver highlights songs he popularized and notable covers. With airings of a Smithsonian Channel special Legend of Lead Belly this month and Tuesday's release of the five-disc set Lead Belly: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection, the late folk-blues icon Huddie "Lead Belly'' Ledbetter gets his due. Pimple Popper (BTW, I kept my eyes averted when looking for the link for Dr. You know what, this is on par with that reality show Dr. Apparently, this painting was to denote that those super long tapeworms would occasionally find their way into European nobles and it wasn’t just a thing happening in Asia. I needed to know what that piece of yarn represented. This painting creeped me out so much, I had to do further research. She’d be the first one to announce, as the 3 lie on hay, “I’ve never done this sort of thing before.” Ok Karen, the tramp stamp on your lower-back proves otherwise, but ok. Like, I think this dude’s dream of having a threesome is coming true but the chic on the right is still a bit unsure. Perhaps the guy with the WTF attitude doesn’t realize this is a public bathroom? I also think the dude on the left is holding his hand out like, “get us some toilet paper or leaves or something.” Hey, the friends that hover together, stay together, am I right? Ladies, you know how you use the restroom in a really nasty stall and your goal is to touch nothing? It’s the hover method right? Where you don’t sit but you practically pull a muscle squatting. Enjoy! The Hover Method in Medieval Times I could totally see this being a series and do different time periods with the oddest paintings if you guys like these. So I thought it would be fun to scour the internet and bring to you some of the oddest paintings I could find but also comment on them. I really don’t think it’s a matter of us not understanding what life was like back then. I don’t know what brought this to mind, perhaps it was something on tv but I always thought to myself that much of medieval art is creepy and weird. However, 10-15 percent of people have a hypersensitive gag reflex (HGR), which continues to get activated by substances in the mouth. Most often, sufferers of HGR gag while eating sticky foods that tend to get stuck in the mouth, such as bananas and mashed potatoes in extreme cases, oversensitive gagging can cause picky eating or even malnourishment. In children and adults, the reflex is usually only triggered by the presence of an unusually large object in the back of the throat. Starting around the 6- or 7-month mark in babies, the gag reflex diminishes, allowing a baby to swallow chunky or solid foods. In the first few months of a baby's life, this reflex is triggered by any food that a region of the brain stem called the "nucleus tractus solitaries" (which is wired to nerve endings in the mouth) judges to be too chunky for a baby's stomach to digest. Cancer growing in these parts of the body may narrow these passages.Difficulty. Others may feel like food is stuck in their throat.Causes of swallowing problemsOne cause is cancer, especially in the mouth, throat, or esophagus. Some people may gag, cough, or choke when trying to swallow. It means having trouble passing food or liquid down the throat. I have a pretty strong gag reflex and it does not work for me either. Difficulty swallowing is called dysphagia. By thrusting objects in the throat toward the opening of the mouth, the gag reflex expels substances that the brain has deemed harmful. Open your mouth wide, slightly tilt your head back, keep pushing your tongue forward as hard as you can, and push a little bit from the back of your throat as if you were trying to get up some phlegm. |
